100 Years of Rolex for iPhone

About a year ago, I wrote about Mondani’s book ’100 years of Rolex’, which is a must have if you are a (serious) Rolex passionate. Now, especially for the iPhone user, Mondani Editore created an iPhone app (Apple users like to use this shortcut for ‘application’) that contains 182MB of information about Rolex wristwatches. Since Rolex, and especially vintage Rolex, is booming – this might be a well-aimed shot from the creators of this iPhone [killer] app.

For a fraction of the price of the book (which is around 299 Euro), you will buy your own electronic copy of 100 years of Rolex, which contains over 500 high quality pictures,replica u boat watches, updated prices and enables you to search Rolex models on model, production year, reference and value. This iPhone app costs 9,99 Euro and is available through Apple’s AppStore.

The application has categories on Years, Model, References, Movies and the aforementioned search option. Let me show you a few examples of what this application does, using some screendumps I just made with my iPhone.

First of all, you can flip to the most important years of Rolex’s history, starting in 1908 ofcourse, when Hans Wilsdorf registered Rolex.

However, being a Rolex enthusiast for years and owning several nice publications on the subject, I quickly skipped to the Models section. This Explorer section for example, period and reference numbers show the various models made. Clicking the latest 114270 model shows the following:

Interested in the vintage Rolex GMT-Master ref.1675? Currently quite popular amongst collectors (sold mine too quickly for too little money).. When clicking the blue icon (telling us it has 7 pictures inside), you will see the following:

A nice close-up of the Rolex GMT-Master ref.1675 on a Jubil?ɬ� bracelet. As you are used from Apple’s iPhone, using your fingers to either zoom-in or zoom-out, also perfectly works with this ’100 years of Rolex’ app.

The Movies category shows you in which movies you can see a Rolex wristwatch. I think Ed Heliosz started this hype – of listing watches used in movies – in 1998, and it became the sub-hobby of many of us watch nuts (including Jake’s ).

I think Guide Mondani Editore did a very nice job on this 100 years of Rolex app for iPhone. Yet another great iPhone app for many watch enthusiasts,rolex replica, since the Uhren Katalog and Jaeger-LeCoultre iPhone applications. World Watch Report (IC-Agency) did some research on iPhone applications and the world of sheer Luxury, which you can find here.

The 9,99 Euro can make people a bit hesitant to buy this app, but you have my recommendation (for what it’s worth). A true killer app (for Rolex fans),rolex replika!!

The Be & D Barclay Tote goes camouflage

Friday Funday Lady Gaga rocks crazy McQueen shoes

Back when I wrote about the fantastical, confusing,Its like you read my mind, reptilian shoes that Alexander McQueen showed for his brilliant Spring 2010 runway show, I remember thinking that the only person that I could see actually trying to wear the shoes in any serious way was Lady Gaga. Apparently I can predict the future, so if any of you would like to know if you should dump your current boyfriend, you know who to ask.

Should Christian Louboutin stick to shoes

Christian Louboutin has been far more successful with shoes than he has been with bags, and I’m having a hard time figuring out exactly why that is. This is the year of the Reverso by Jaeger-LeCoultre, an icon that has been around since 1931. Today, Jaeger-LeCoultre announced their latest Reverso line-up, including this Grande Reverso Email. Steve McQueen's Rolex 5512 on Antiquorum

On the 11th of June, Antiquorum is auctioning Timepieces from Twentieth Century Icons. This auction includes some stuff that belonged to Steve McQueen. Besides the actual watch that Steve McQueen wore in the Le Mans movie, the Heuer Monaco (ref.1133), Antiquorum is also auctioning his Von Dutch motorcycle (what has this to do with timepieces you may ask? I don’t know. It has to do with money probably.) and a Rolex Submariner 5512 that was given to Jimmy Brucker, early 1980. I don’t know if it is the actual watch that has been spotted on the wrist of Steve McQueen several times, or that it is just a similar model. Chad McQueen, Steve’s son, has been spotted wearing a similar Submariner as well. Who knows.

Antiquorum estimates that the Heuer Monaco between 10.000 USD and 20.000 USD. Same goes for the Rolex Submariner 5512. I think both estimates are a bit low to be honest, especially when it is proven that Steve McQueen actually wore this Submariner in his private life as well. The Heuer Monaco was given away after the movie, as soon as he hit the way back home. So far for Steve’s loyalty to the Heuer Monaco. Who’s to blame? Certainly not Steve McQueen, but this is once again showing the sad marketing by TAG Heuer of milking out the use of their watch in a movie. And let’s be honest now, this movie isn’t that great either,discount rolex watch, except for the nice scenery.

Anyway, well informed sources over at ‘Das Rolex Forum‘ said that the dial has been replaced at some point during the watch’s lifetime. The watch is obviously polished a few times as well. However, that doesn’t count,discount watch, when someone (which I think should be Antiquorum’s role) can prove that Steve McQueen actually did wear this particular watch.

Other timepieces in this auction are a gold Cartier Pasha with quartz movement, given to Sammy Davis Jr. by his friend Frank Sinatra, also in 1980.?Ǭ� Estimated price is between 10.000 USD and 20.000 USD. It seems to me that the ‘experts’ over at Antiquorum have an easy job, or are just lazy. Then there are these Gruen and Movado watches. The Gruen was a gift from Frank Sinatra to a friend of his, Al Silvani. Frank seemed to enjoy giving away timepieces. The Movado was a gift to President Roosevelt, by his son-in-law, for his 63rd birthday in 1945. This watch is estimated at 50.000 USD to 60.000 USD.

Audemars Piguet ROC 26300 - One Of My Favorite Watches Explained

Exactly one year ago, I bought an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph (also nick named ‘ROC’) ref.26300 to accompany my precious Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ ref.15202. I added the ROC because I missed the thicker bracelet and case of the Royal Oak ‘Date’ ref.15300 I previously owned.

The AP ROC has become one of my favorite watches and is always in my weekly watch rotating programme (something I learned to do from Chuck Maddox). The ‘Newman’ or ‘Panda’ dial combination has become a popular model amongst the Audemars Piguet ROC fan base, given the times this exact configuration pops-up at the ‘new watch’-threads at TimeZone’s Audemars Piguet forum.

The owner of the wacth picture above, Luke, explains to the readers that although the watch only measures 39mm in diameter,designer leather handbags wholesale, it certainly wears a bit bigger. A. Lange & S ɬ hne Adapts to Changing Time (Zones)

At the 2009 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (“SIHH”), an event similar to Baselworld but with a much smaller group of brands (and primarily those of the Richemont Group), A. Lange & S?ɬ?hne introduced a new version for its Lange 1 Time Zone collection.

This new variation on the Lange 1 Time Zone features a slate grey dial with a new world time ring that now includes Santiago de Chile, in place of Caracas, Venezuela.?Ǭ�?Ǭ� Among other reasons,wholesale bags online, this change of cities was made because Venezuela (in an odd attempt by Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez to achieve “a more fair distribution of the sunrise“) changed its time zone from Atlantic Standard Time (UTC-4) to (UTC-4:30) – which as a result makes the city of Caracas not well compatible with the watch function (also duly noted on Luxist blog).

The Lange 1 Time Zone measures 41.9 mm in diameter, is powered by a manually-wound Lange L031.1 caliber in-house movement with a 72 hour power reserve.?Ǭ� The slate color of the dial really is a bit darker than usual, but it seems to highlight nicely the 18K pink gold hands and provides for a nice contrast.

Linde Werdelin Spidolite with Svend Anderson movement

Mid-November, I blogged about Linde Werdelin, a brand that has its focus on toolwatches for die-hards. This coming Basel, they are expanding their collection with the Linde Werdelin Spidolite Watch. This watch will be available in titanium,rolex submariner replica, titanium DLC (limited edition) and in titanium with a skeleton dial (also limited edition). The best part is (in my opinion), the movement for the sekeleton dial version. This movement is a 1970′s automatic mechanical movement, modified by Svend Anderson. Svend Anderson is member of the AHCI (Acad?ɬ�mie Horlog?ɬ�re des Cr?ɬ�ateurs Ind?ɬ�pendants).

The Spidolite skeleton dial version is a 46x49mm wristwatch, with a height of 12mm. This hockey puck in titanium has a see-through sapphire crystal case back that shows the 42 hour power reserve movement by Svend Anderson. The watch is water resistant to a 1000 feet (300 meters) and has a textile strap with titanium buckle.

Peter Speake-Marin Piccadilly Diamond Skulls - Hands On

There is horology, and there is art. And sometimes there is both. The first popular culture reference to skulls in recent times can probably be traced to Damien Hirst and his diamond-covered skull; I was struck by a sense of déjà-vu when viewing this watch for the first time. But there actually was not one, but two diamond-covered skulls. I have to admit, this watch was making me feel a little uncomfortable. We’ll come back to this in a minute.

Dial aside, the rest of the watch is classic Peter Speake-Marin: a chunky 950 platinum Piccadilly case with thick, straight lugs terminating in oversized screwed bars; aviator crown; vertically sided caseband. All in platinum, of course – as befitting a piece unique. Aside from the hands, the initial aesthetic of the watch is one of being visually ‘light’ – thanks to the various textures and reflective surfaces on the upper portions of the watch.

The only counterpoint to this are the oversized blued hands, which are beautifully finished and curve gracefully, complimenting the organic lines of the skull. It’s actually a good thing that the rest of the dial is light and reflective, as this only serves to further highlight the beautiful shade of blue of the hands. Another nice touch is the antireflective coating on the crystal; I can’t imagine the watch without it given the dial contents!

Personally, I think the real treasure lies around the back. Flip the watch over,cheap wholesale fashion handbags, and one’s first impression is that the German silver movement plates have also been covered in diamonds – fortunately, that is not the case. Instead, they are completely covered in elegant swirls – the effect somehow brings to mind a mad Lange engraver who has gone to town on not only the balance cock, but the entire movement.

Powering the Diamond Skulls is Speake-Marin’s SM2 handwind movement; there is nothing complicated about the layout or mechanics, but it is beautifully executed. The arcing bridges are a nice change from the conventional, too. There are a lot of nice details on this movement: the enormous barrel jewel that looks like an eye; the cutout for the great wheel; a beautiful swanneck regulator; separate name-plate-bridge,leather handbag manufacturers, and a rather unusual barrel click design. This results in some strange winding feedback – it’s smooth but has a little resistance and tooth to it.

Finishing, of course, is absolutely first class all over. Even examining the components under 40-50x magnification, surface polish, cleanliness, edge evenness etc are all clean and uniform. This is most impressive indeed. If this watch were mine, I’d get Speake-Marin to case it upside down, or at least wear it that way.

Back to the skulls. I’m done photographing the movement; when I flip it over, the heads are no longer jarring but somehow sad and happy at the same time; maybe it’s the angle of their tilt and the smiling tooth-line. And the polish of the eye-sockets reflects the underside of the blued hands in a liquid flowing pool of white gold.

You know something, I think the skulls are growing on me.

One of Benzinger’s specialities are their skeletonized and fully engraved watches; they obviously have no dial (nor do they need one) to best show off all of the details. The owner of this piece related an anecdote – he passed it on to a fellow collector, quite well known in horological circles, for his opinion on the finishing. He asked for a loupe and examined the watch – then seconds later, replied ‘I can’t tell at all, the entire damn thing is engraved!’

IWC Pilot DLC Project - What Do You Think

Yesterday, I’ve received a number of pictures from people working on a new project, IWC Pilot DLC watches. They customized the IWC Pilot Mark XVI ref.3235 and Pilot Chronograph ref.3717 and give it a slide bit of blue by adding a blue NATO strap and a blue second hand. I personally think they did a nice job on these pilot’s watches and it is refreshing to see some non-Rolex customizations for a change.

As you can see,rolex explorer II replica, these IWC Pilot watches are now even more stealth looking as they were before. The technical specifications remain the same as that of their original brothers of course (click here),discount rolex watch, except for the DLC cases and NATO straps. The small blue hand ‘gimmick’ is a very nice feature imho. Personally, I would favor the chronograph..
